RAISING READERS WITH JACKIE
Have you heard of the Summer Slide?
Kids who do not read (or are read to) throughout the summer can lose up to ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ of reading progress– and its cumulative over time! This is the #1 reason why the literacy gap widens year after year.
So how do we prevent it from happening?
Get thee to the library and let your child choose what they want to read. Yes, comic books and even audio books count!
Just 20 minutes is enough to be effective! Ten minutes in the am and ten minutes before bed and BOOM you’ve met the goal! Of course nothing is stopping you from reading longer.ย Try for 5 picture books a day or two chapters in a longer book.
Yes, even if your readers are older, there are measurable benefits to reading aloud. Take turns reading a chapter book each night to each other or over breakfast in the morning. You’ll love the bonding time, and it will give you something new to chat about as well!
